Likeadelago's Injury More Serious Than First Thought

08-April-2010

As reported earlier, Likeadelago returned to Toolernvale for a spell after a poor run at Cranbourne where he both pulled up lame and flipped his palate.

After returning to Toolernvale to spell at the home of one of Australia's premier horse surgeons, Alastair (MacLean) checked the big fella over and discovered more serious ligament damage. Operations Manager Dave Jones submitted the following after speaking to Alastair ...

I spoke to Alastair yesterday where Likeadelago is now spelling. As you would have heard, Likeadelago pulled up sore after his last start. He has suffered a flipped palate and is also now suffering from some suspensory ligament problems. The flipped palate was probably due to the pain he felt from the suspensory ligament issue.

The suspensory ligament issues, however, are more serious. Horses suffer from this quite a lot, especially big horses with the extra weight on their legs. The best way to explain it is it's like an achilles heal issue. It will mean that the horse will need to have a minimum of 6 months in the paddock, possibly up to 12. He will need to let nature take its course and its a wait and see game to see if the ligaments heal properly. After that he will need a very slow preparation to ensure the leg stands up to the rigors of training and then racing. Alastair was adamant that if we brought the horse back any earlier, he may well get to the trial stage, however, with the pressure of racing and or trialing he would, most likely break down.

Hopefully the long break will do him good and we'll see him back to his old best some time in 2011

The injury is a serious one and while time should heal, is unlikely but possibly career threatening. Together with Alastair we are putting a plan together which will include stays at varied and appropriate locations throughout the spell, to increase the probability of a healthy return to racing in 6-12 months time.

In the meantime, we will keep you up to date on his and the syndicates progress.
